About the Character
Peeta Mellark comes from the nation of Panem in the 12th district. The nation of Panem is set in the future, after the destruction of our current civilization. Panem is split into 13 districts and the Capitol. The Capitol destroyed the 13th district and, as a show of power, holds a competition every year called The Hunger Games. Two kids from each district (one boy and one girl) are randomly chosen to take part. The Hunger Games are a televised event where the kids are forced to kill each other, stuck in a wild arena where the gamemakers can affect them with weather, animals, etc. In the 74th Annual Games, Peeta and Katniss Everdeen are the tributes for district 12. They manage to survive by pretending to be lovers, winning the audience’s favor.
Katniss is really unsure how she feels about Peeta, but Peeta has loved Katniss since he was little. He’s a rather love-sick pup throughout the series, doing anything to keep her alive. He’s very affectionate and is a very friendly guy. He’s very charismatic, and knows how to speak to a crowd. He’s compassionate, as shown by his treatment to the dead tributes’ families and to the morphling addict. When he wants to be mean, he can. He showed this side when he was determined to keep Katniss alive in the second Games and trained Katniss, Haymitch, and himself. His father is a baker, so he grew up learning how to cook. He can make all different kinds of bread, and is really good at decorating cakes. He’s a very artistic fellow. He picked up painting after the first Games and paints his memories. It’s the way he deals with the darkness. He is also very talented at camouflage. When he was injured, he hid himself from the enemy by blending himself in with his surroundings.
Peeta didn’t live in the Seam like Katniss, and grew up a little wealthier, although he says his family could only eat the stale bread they couldn’t sell. When they were children, and Katniss’ family was starving, Katniss looked in the bakery hungrily. Peeta’s mom yelled at her to go away. Peeta burnt some bread, and his mom beat him for it, but he ran out and gave the bread to Katniss. Peeta never wanted to be a pawn in the Capitol’s Games. He’s not as quick as Katniss at figuring signals out, but he can lie pretty effectively. He lies to the crowd throughout the Games to get on their good side.
Peeta is around Katniss’ age, so I’m guessing he’s seventeen. He has blonde hair and blue eyes with long eyelashes. He has two older brothers and parents. He’s decently handsome, but he’s not a heartthrob like Finnick Odair. He has a prosthetic leg from having lost his real one in the first Games. Although he teases Katniss for being innocent, Peeta comes off as innocent a lot of times. It doesn’t seem like nudity really bothers him, but violence and cruelty gets to him. He was flabbergasted when Katniss explained that he accidentally killed Foxface, and he had to kill Brutus. He is a normal teenage boy, but a little darker due to his experiences in the arena.
