He’s skilled in painting and camouflage, and uses that skillset to frost fancy cakes. He’s handy with a knife and can coax a fire out of damp wood. He can lift and throw hundred-pound bags of flour and he’s very good at wrestling. He’s decent with knot tying and knows a trap that will leave a human dangling by a leg from a tree. He excels in hand-to-hand combat, and has some knowledge in knife throwing, making shelter, spear throwing, and edible plant life. He’s very good at public speaking, is charming and charismatic, and is very good at lying.

I am so sorry this got so long. Please forgive me and my ramblyness. I just love this series.
Since he was five, Peeta Mellark has been in love with Katniss Everdeen. It started when she stood up and sang for the class. He kept tabs on her, trying to work up the nerve to speak to her, but he never could. Their only interaction before the reaping was when they were both eleven. Several weeks before May 8th (Katniss’ birthday, the day she would turn twelve and be able to sign up for tesserae), her family was starving. Katniss was going through the baker’s trash bins when Mrs. Mellark yelled at her. Peeta purposefully burned bread, resulting in him getting hit, to give to Katniss. This bread saved Katniss and her family and gave her hope and courage to continue. Peeta and Katniss continue to keep tabs on each other. Peeta grows up with his family, a father, mother, and at least two older brothers. When he and Katniss are sixteen, they get reaped or chosen as tributes for District 12 for the 74th Hunger Games. They’re given time to talk to their families before they have to leave. His mom says that District 12 might finally have a winner, and that “she” was a survivor, implying that she thought Katniss could win, not her son. When they leave for the train, Katniss notices Peeta’s been crying.
On the train, Peeta smashes Haymitch’s glass when he’s not taking them seriously. He speaks up about Katniss’ abilities and is rather self-deprecating about his own. Before the Games, he helps Katniss out many times, like when he lies about the Avox, makes sure Haymitch knows her skills, steadies her in the chariot, or makes her seem desirable by his confession in the interviews. Peeta sets them up as star-crossed lovers, which makes the crowd wild and helps them get sponsors. At the beginning of the Games, Katniss is about to run for the bow and participate in the bloodbath, but Peeta distracts her by shaking his head ‘no’ so she ends up grabbing a bag and running. Peeta presumably participated in the bloodbath since he is in good standing with the Careers, but canon never says either way. He teams up with the careers and pretends to help them look for Katniss while relying on their protection. He kills the District 8 female. The Careers get mixed up in the wall of fire, and then they find Katniss and chase her up a tree. Katniss saws off a branch with a nest of tracker jackers on it and it stings the Careers, killing two. Katniss takes the bow off Glimmer’s hands. Peeta tells her to run and fights Cato, getting injured.
After Rue’s death, the Gamemakers announce that two can win the Hunger Games if they’re from the same district. Katniss finds Peeta, but he’s badly injured. They play up the lovers angle, though Peeta is genuine about it, and Katniss is confused. Katniss goes to the ‘feast’ and gets Peeta the medicine he needs. Together they battle mutts and Cato and win the Hunger Games. The Gamemakers take back the rule change, but Katniss and Peeta threaten to commit suicide, so they name them both winners. It’s a slap in the face to the Capitol. Peeta lost his leg and now has a fake leg.
In Catching Fire, they take their victory tour, in which their feelings are very complicated and confusing. Then, as a special Hunger Games for it being a Quarter Quell, they reap past winners. Katniss and Peeta go back into the arena. They form an alliance with Finnick, Johanna, Beetee, and Wiress. Haymitch is working behind the scenes for the rebels, and they blow the forcefield and collect all the tributes but Peeta, who is captured by the Capitol.

He’s gotten big and strong physically from lugging around hundred pound bags of flour and wrestling. But Peeta’s very in touch with his emotions. He cries after he sees his family after the reaping. He’s charming in the interviews, blowing the other contestants out of the water. And he’s also very sure to watch out for the girl he’s in love with.
Peeta grew up in the merchant’s section of district 12, above the bakery where he worked. Peeta has a quiet, gentle father, who probably influenced him the most. His father most likely influenced his views when he calls for a ceasefire in the third book because he thinks humans will just wipe each other out. He also gets his loving nature and kindness from his father, who actually gave Katniss some cookies just out of the kindness of his heart and promised to look after Prim should she die. Peeta does kind things such as cleaning Haymitch up when he vomits or complimenting Katniss on her costume. His mother is harsh and cruel, and is shown to have hit Peeta. This is probably where he got his fire and snark, such as when he muses about the arena being a cake, or when he argues with Katniss on the roof and snaps at her. His brothers are older, at least one was still young enough to volunteer in place of him, but did not. Despite this, Peeta seems to love his family. Peeta did not grow up struggling to get food on the table like Katniss, but they did not get fine food. They mostly ate the leftover bread or traded it for squirrels with Katniss.
His core motivations are to keep Katniss alive, to keep himself alive, and to stay himself. He is willing to kill and lie to protect Katniss. He lies on many occasions to protect her, such as about the Avox, in the arena with the Careers, to the cameras, and in his interviews. He’s willing to lie for a bit to protect himself, as shown by his short alliance with the Careers in the first book. They might tease him and call him lover boy, but they would want to kill him for his part in their deaths.

Chosen WEAPON:
Peeta’s chosen weapon would be a set of throwing knives from the Initiative armory. They would be something very similar to the knives Clove uses in the first book, something fine and light to throw, with a long sharp blade, but with a serrated portion near the handle that can be used for sawing. The knives could be used in many different situations (slicing someone’s throat, stabbing someone, etc) but the way the knives evolve will be that they will become easier to throw and hit someone with, meaning Peeta will be able to hit targets from farther distances as his weapon evolves.
Character INVENTORY: The tribute outfit, “a fitted blue jumpsuit made of very sheer material, that zippers up the front. A six-inch-wide padded belt covered in shiny purple plastic. A pair of nylon shoes with rubber soles.” He also probably has a knife.
